GIRL!
glitter, acrylic paint, various glues, paper, yarn + found objects on canvas
24 x 48 inches, 2024
Through GIRL!, I explore the internal and external facets of the female vessel, embodying the multifaceted and contradictory perceptions of femininity—both celebrated and vilified, powerful and vulnerable.
I confront the sterile and outdated dichotomies of purity and corruption, beauty and horror, and strength and weakness, ultimately emphasizing the impossibility of defining the journey of womanhood singularly, as all characteristics exist on a spectrum.
The glitter, symbols, and objects adorning the figure serve as both armor and vulnerability, encapsulating the constant negotiation between self-expression, societal perception, and safety. This work symbolizes the allure and glamor often imposed on women, as well as the physical and symbolic weaponization of the female body, but from your gaze. I celebrate and critique the diverse, beautiful, painful, and resilient nature of the female experience while grappling with historical and contemporary narratives surrounding
femininity.
GIRL! juxtaposes innocence with the macabre, drawing on tropes from media, societal expectations, and cultural lore to question the stereotypes and pressures imposed on women. GIRL! celebrates you, and she celebrates me.
